About the museum
The house was built around 1880, when Federico García Rodríguez married his first wife, Matilde Palacios. Federico García Lorca was born there in 1898. The Diputación de Granada bought the property in 1982 and opened it as a museum in 1986, the first dedicated to the poet in the province.
The restoration was carried out under the supervision of Isabel García Lorca, the poet’s sister. Much of the furniture and memorabilia on display belonged to the García Lorca family. The visit takes in the entrance, the staircase, the kitchen, the garden and the upstairs bedrooms, where objects such as the cradle and the piano are preserved.
The museum holds written and graphic documents, household items and trousseau linked to Lorca’s life and work, as well as books, letters, drawings and some of the few known photographs of him. It is managed by the Patronato Cultural Federico García Lorca, linked to the Diputación de Granada.
