About the museum
The Instituto de América of Santa Fe is an institution of the Santa Fe town council, founded in 1992 to deepen knowledge of American art and culture and to promote it. Its creation is linked to the cultural festival of the Capitulaciones de Santa Fe, which the town celebrates to assert its Columbian character, and to the investment made for the Fifth Centenary of the Discovery of America.
Its headquarters is the Centro Damián Bayón, opened in 1992 in the historic quarter, next to the Colegiata de la Encarnación, on the Plaza de España, the former Plaza de Armas of the military town. The building was erected on the orchards of the Casa Real de Santa Fe and later of the Hospital Real. It houses permanent and temporary exhibition rooms, the Archivo Histórico Municipal (municipal historical archive), a study centre that manages the legacies of the art historian Damián Bayón and the artist Julio Juste, and an auditorium.
The permanent displays include the Espacio Juste, devoted to the work and legacy of Julio Juste Ocaña, and the exhibition on Christopher Columbus's first voyage and the Capitulations signed in Santa Fe in 1492.
