About the museum

The building is a traditional two-storey farmhouse, erected on the foundations of the house that Lorca’s father turned into the family’s rural home between 1905 and 1909. The poet went to school there and first saw a travelling puppet theatre, an experience that awakened his interest in theatre. He spent his summers there until 1926.

The house was designed both as a home and as a storehouse for the harvest. Next to it is a small annexe of more modest construction, where the farmhands lived. Both open onto a large courtyard with yards and the old stable, now converted into a theatre and exhibition room. The complex belongs to the Valderrubio town council.

The guided visit also includes the Casa de Bernarda Alba, at Calle Real, 1. This is the Alba family house, restored by the town council, which Lorca knew because of the well it shared with the home of his aunt Matilde and which inspired his drama “La casa de Bernarda Alba”. Its rooms explain the origin of the play and the symbols that run through it, and the old stable holds editions of the play in many languages.
