About the museum

The Museo de Bielsa, dedicated to José Mª Escalona, is a museum of Bielsa Town Council. It is housed inside the Casa Consistorial, a Renaissance building from 1565 that was restored to accommodate it. It has the collaboration of the Comarca de Sobrarbe, the Pyrenees World Geopark, the Diputación de Huesca (provincial council) and the Government of Aragon.

The ground floor presents Bielsa and its territory. The first floor covers the history and culture of the community: the economy of the valley (livestock farming, agriculture, mining, timber, electricity and smuggling), the population, the local language, cuisine, traditional dress and vernacular architecture. A dedicated space covers the Bolsa de Bielsa, the episode of 1938 during the Civil War when the population fled to France. The museum holds documents, photographs and weapons from that conflict and shows a projection about the events.

The second floor displays the traditional house, with a re-created kitchen with figures dressed in traditional costume, as well as the falsa (the loft under the roof) and the bedroom alcove, and it is devoted to the Carnival of Bielsa. A two-screen projection presents the festival, and the costumes of its characters are on display: trangas, onsos and madamas.
