About the museum
The Museo del Traje Ansotano is located in the former hermitage of Santa Bárbara in Ansó and is run by the town council. It is dedicated to the traditional dress of this Pyrenean village, which dates back to the Middle Ages and is regarded as one of the oldest and best-preserved in Europe. It stands out for its hard-wearing, colourful fabrics, its numerous decorative motifs and its elaborate hairstyles.
The route follows the different stages of life in Ansó through clothing. There was a costume for every occasion and need, and dress hardly marked any difference in class: rich and poor dressed in a similar way and were distinguished only by the quality of some fabrics and by jewellery, which was often imported. The museum has seven display cases, and each one has its own audio guide.
The costume was worn every day until well into the 20th century. Every year, on the last Sunday of August, the Día del Traje Típico Ansotano, declared of National Tourist Interest, brings together more than a hundred villagers in their costumes, such as the christening, periquillo, confraternity or saya outfits.
