About the museum

The museum began as a section of the Museo de Jaén. It was founded in 1971 and opened on 23 September 1983. Today it reports directly to the Provincial Delegation of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía. Its seat is the Castillo de la Yedra, which was expropriated and restored in 1972; the keep was first fitted out for the exhibition.

The castle, also called de las Cuatro Esquinas (of the Four Corners) because of the square plan of its main tower, is Cazorla's most notable monument. It has three enclosures; the highest holds the four-storey keep with a crenellated terrace, while the other two are gardens. The present structure dates from the reform carried out by Archbishop Pedro Tenorio in 1394, but there is no reliable information about its origins: it is thought that the Arabs built it on the remains of a Roman fortress.

Most of the collection on display comes on deposit from the Museo de Jaén, together with donations, purchases and pieces found on the site itself. The route includes a chapel with a large Christ on a cypress cross and paintings of the apostles, an armoury and a noble hall with a Gothic ribbed vault, tapestries and bargueños (fall-front cabinets).
