About the museum
The Museo de Historia de Arévalo was founded in 2011 and is run by the town council. It occupies the Casa de los Sexmos, a building on the medieval Plaza de la Villa which the official tourism portal links to the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas by the Catholic Monarchs. Arévalo, in the province of Ávila, is known for its medieval heritage and as the place where Isabel la Católica spent her childhood.
The museum sees itself as a mediator between the town's history and its residents and visitors, and places the visitor at the centre of the experience. Five rooms use objects, panels and audiovisual resources to explain the cultures, uses, buildings and notable people of Arévalo.
The collection of around one hundred pieces ranges from archaeological objects from the Chalcolithic and the Roman world to medieval, early modern and contemporary pieces. It is complemented by models of the town's main monuments and by a room dedicated to Autun, the French city twinned with Arévalo since 2005. Among the highlights is a painting bearing the coat of arms of Charles V, on loan from the Monasterio de Santa María la Real. The museum has also hosted temporary exhibitions linked to Las Edades del Hombre and offers educational visits adapted to each audience.
