About the museum

The Museo de Historia Militar opened its doors in December 2021 on the Plaza de San Francisco, in the centre of Málaga. It houses a private collection that the museum itself presents as one of the largest of its kind open to the public in Spain, focusing on the uniforms of the Spanish army regiments of the early 20th century.

The permanent exhibition is titled “Un país, tres coronas” (“One Country, Three Crowns”) and covers, across around 140 m² in four rooms, Spanish military history from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. The pieces are grouped by theme and follow a chronological order in three periods: 1898 to 1931, with overseas and African uniforms and regulation changes during the reign of Alfonso XIII; 1931 to 1939, covering the Second Republic and the Civil War; and 1936 to 1975, with the military uprising in Africa, the postwar period and the participation of the División Azul (Blue Division) in the Second World War.

The entrance features a 19th-century tapestry from Málaga and two bronze lions with a flag from the 1898–1931 period. The collection also includes Military Merit crosses in various versions dating from before 1931, alongside a commemorative booklet from the 1860 war in Africa.
