About the museum

The Museo de la Semana Santa de Málaga occupies the premises around the main courtyard of the former Hospital de San Julián, in the historic centre. The hospital was founded in 1683 by the Hermandad de la Santa Caridad, and its church was blessed in 1699. The Agrupación de Cofradías de Semana Santa received the building in 1976 by decree of the Bishopric and moved into it in 1987, after a restoration that ended with the inauguration of the seat on 17 December of that year.

The Agrupación's seat is organised into three spaces: the church, the museum and the administrative and social area. The museum opened in 2010, is run by the Agrupación de Cofradías and covers around 1,092 m² across two floors and six themed rooms. It presents a collection on the history of the brotherhoods and of the Agrupación itself, the processions, music, traditional craft trades, images, processional vestments and goldsmith work, floats and processional equipment, as well as a room dedicated to the Holy Week posters and a video documentary.

The visit includes the church of San Julián, the Agrupación's canonical seat, which holds an important series of Baroque paintings by Juan Niño de Guevara, and the central courtyard with its fountain.
