About the museum

The Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga opened on 24 March 2011 in the Palacio de Villalón, a Renaissance building in the historic centre of the city. It arose from an agreement between Málaga City Council and Carmen Cervera, Baroness Thyssen-Bornemisza, who lent part of her private collection on deposit in exchange for a venue in which to display it. The palace was rehabilitated and enlarged with two new buildings between 2007 and 2011.

The collection consists of 19th-century Spanish painting, with special attention to Andalusia, and is arranged in four sections: Maestros antiguos (Old Masters), Paisaje romántico y costumbrismo (Romantic Landscape and Costumbrismo), Preciosismo y paisaje naturalista (Preciosismo and Naturalist Landscape), and Fin de siglo. Among the artists represented are Zurbarán, Fortuny, Carlos de Haes, Sorolla, Regoyos, Zuloaga and Julio Romero de Torres.

During the rehabilitation of the building, Roman archaeological remains came to light, among them a nymphaeum, which can be seen with the admission ticket that includes the archaeological site. Besides the permanent collection, the museum programmes temporary exhibitions, guided tours and educational and family activities.
