About the museum
The museum belongs to the Academia General Militar in Zaragoza and forms part of the museum heritage of the Ministry of Defence. Its origins go back to 1947, when General Santiago Amado Loriga promoted the so-called “Museo de los Sitios” (Museum of the Sieges), which depended on the Army Museum and was dismantled in 1950. In 1962 General Eduardo de Madariaga began the current museum, which opened in 1964 while General Carlos Iniesta Cano was director of the Academy. The facilities were refurbished in 2009.
The museum keeps memorabilia of the former military schools and academies and divides its holdings among eight rooms: entrance hall, teaching room, memorabilia room, Príncipe de Asturias miniatures room, room of the laureate knights (caballeros laureados), weapons room, room of the Sieges of Zaragoza and room of the fallen.
Among its pieces are uniforms of the Academy and of foreign academies, light and edged weapons, flags and documents, the Academy's first computer (1976), documents of the Sieges of Zaragoza with an original signature by Napoleon and a portrait of Agustina de Aragón. The visit is guided and explains the stages of military training, with content adapted to the level of each group.
