About the museum
The Alma Mater Museum occupies the Archbishop’s Palace of Zaragoza, next to the cathedral of La Seo, on a site with a long history: the bishops’ houses, documented from 1119 and later a residence linked to the kings of Aragon. The third floor preserves halls of a Renaissance palace built by Archbishop Hernando de Aragón.
The museum replaced the former Diocesan Museum (MUDIZ) and brings together the artistic heritage of the archdiocese. Its route combines religious art with the history of the city and of the building itself, which is explained with audiovisuals, and it is arranged over several floors and rooms.
The pieces on display include early Christian objects, sculptures of the Virgin from different periods, paintings and sculptures from the 16th and 17th centuries with works by Damián Forment and Francisco Bayeu, goldsmithing, ornaments and processional crosses. The upper floor also houses the Salón de los Obispos and the Salón del Trono, with a gallery of portraits of archbishops.
