About the museum

The Museo del Puerto Fluvial de Caesaraugusta displays the remains of the ancient port of the Roman city, present-day Zaragoza, and is part of the Caesaraugusta Route together with the Forum, Public Baths and Theatre museums. It is located on the Plaza de San Bruno, in the historic centre of Zaragoza.

In Roman times the Ebro was navigable, and Caesaraugusta became the main trading hub for goods in the middle of the valley. Pottery, marble, wine amphorae, salted fish, jewellery and glassware were carried upriver, while wool, hides, iron, linen, salt, wheat and timber were sent downriver. The port was built in the 1st century AD on the right bank of the river, close to the forum, with which it was connected by stairs. At the end of the 1st century or the beginning of the 2nd, a market was added. Port activity continued until the middle of the 6th century.

The visit combines the archaeological remains of these installations with an interactive audiovisual on river trade, shown in Spanish, French and English, and a touchable sound model with Braille labels.
