About the museum
The Museo de la Acuarela Rafael Requena is located in the Casa de Cultura of Caudete, a building dating from 1912, and holds the only permanent collection devoted to this painter, who was born in the town. Requena became an international reference for watercolour thanks to a highly personal style that masters light and colour and moves its atmospheres between realism and Romanticism.
The collection offers a retrospective of his career, from his early works to his most recent, through 75 watercolours. Landscapes predominate: wide plains, rural scenes, seascapes and skies with moving clouds, as well as views of La Mancha, of his home town and of European cities such as Amsterdam, Venice or Friburgo. Some portraits and still lifes complete the display, demonstrating his command of drawing.
The museum is linked to two prominent events in Caudete's cultural calendar: the Certamen Nacional de Acuarela (National Watercolour Competition), held every year since 2000 and bringing together some of Spain's best watercolour painters, and the Bienal Internacional de Acuarela (International Watercolour Biennial), which makes the town known outside the country. Besides the permanent exhibition, the venue hosts activities, workshops and temporary displays.
