About the museum
The Museo de la Cárcel Real, opened in 1999, is one of the pioneering local museums in the province of Cáceres and has always belonged to Coria Town Council. It grew out of a wish to preserve the city's heritage and to bring together the first local archaeological finds.
The building is a prison from the late 17th century that served as the municipal lock-up until October 1981, when it definitively lost its penal use. The building itself is now part of the visit and links the museum's three spaces.
The ground floor houses the archaeology section, which traces the history of Coria from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The upper floor shows the ethnographic section, focused on the San Juan festivities, which were declared a festival of Tourist Interest in 1976.
