About the museum
The North Visitor Centre of Monfragüe National Park opened on 7 May 2018 in Malpartida de Plasencia, next to the EX-208 road, as the park's main gateway. It is a modern building of more than 2,000 square metres, set in the surrounding dehesa (open oak woodland) with views of the Béjar and Gredos sierras. It was financed by the Ministry and then handed over to the Junta de Extremadura for management. The building also houses the park offices.
The exhibition, with audiovisuals, interactives, panels, models and murals, uses birds as its guiding thread to explain the park's ecosystems. It is organised into five sections: “De cuarzo y agua”, “Solana y umbría”, “La dehesa” and “Gestión y conservación”, plus an introduction. It also covers Spain's other national parks, Extremadura's protected areas and the Spanish Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Outside the building there is a 1 km interpretive trail with panels on fauna and flora. The centre also has a multipurpose room, an auditorium and a shop. From here, visitors can plan their visit to the rest of the park according to the time of year and the time available.
