About the museum
The Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Begíjar offers a broad survey of the history and ethnology of the town. It stands out for the quality of its pieces and for its staging, which presents the collection in separate settings devoted to traditional crafts: barber, doctor, blacksmith, apothecary, shepherd, esparto worker, carpenter, midwife, seamstress and shopkeeper.
Among the objects on display is an 18th-century loom, and the museum shows the textile production of the period in linen, wool and silk. It also recreates the domestic spaces of a middle-class house, such as the drawing room, the bedroom and the built-in cupboards (alacenas).
It has a specialist reference library on anthropology, with particular attention to Andalusian ethnography and related subjects. In recent years it has organised numerous temporary exhibitions and published material linked to its workshops and research. It also takes part in cultural events, both its own and public or private ones, to promote the study of anthropology and the social history of Begíjar.
