About the museum
The Museo Mariemma is dedicated to the dancer and choreographer Guillermina Martínez Cabrejas (1917-2008), known as Mariemma, a native of Íscar. In 2002 the artist herself proposed to the mayor of the time the creation of a museum, and on 13 November of that year she donated her entire material legacy to the Íscar town council. The museum opened on 13 February 2007 and presents itself as the first museum of Spanish dance in the world.
The building was fitted out to offer an interactive route that combines traditional elements with audiovisual media. It is spread over four thematic rooms that review Mariemma's career, from her beginnings in dance to her work as a teacher and choreographer, and it has a projection space with excerpts of her performances and interviews.
The collection brings together more than 150 items, including the costumes she wore in her performances, figurines, posters and castanets. The museum depends on the Íscar town council and organises guided visits, workshops and outreach activities on Spanish dance.
