About the museum

The building was designed by provincial architect Javier Aguirre Iturralde and opened in 1908 as a single-teacher school, with room for 120 pupils in two classrooms, one for boys and one for girls. The upper floor housed two dwellings for the male teacher, the female teacher and their families. It is in Viñón, about 2 km from Santa Eulalia, the capital of the Cabranes municipality, 7 km from Villaviciosa and 15 km from Nava.

The museum opened its doors in August 2002 and gave the old school new life. It holds a wide collection of furniture and school materials from between 1911 and 1970: books, primers, maps, catechisms, pen nibs and small slates. The visit offers a chronological tour through the history of education in Asturias, with educational displays based on recreation, giving voice to the people who were educated in these classrooms. Following the architect's original design, the teacher's house was also rebuilt to show family and working life.
