About the museum
The museum is in the town centre of Checa, in a building annexed to the town hall whose origins go back to the 17th and 18th centuries. It functions as the visitor reception centre of the Alto Tajo Natural Park and as a starting point for getting to know this protected area.
The exhibition focuses on the livestock economy that for centuries sustained the mountain communities of Checa and the surrounding area and which, together with timber harvesting, has shaped the park’s landscape. Through original objects, explanatory panels and educational resources, it explains sheep and goat farming, transhumance, pastoral architecture, land use, derived products and traditional tools.
The approach is sensory: visitors can see and touch tools and listen to sounds of the pastoral world, and the exhibition presents a balanced relationship between people, animals and the natural environment.
