About the museum
The Museo de la Remolacha Azucarera (sugar beet museum) opened in 2002 in Alfambra and occupies a modernist washhouse of 1925. The museum project was drafted and directed in 2000 by the museologist Juan José Barragán. The museum explains a decisive period for the municipality: sugar beet cultivation began in the Jiloca and Alfambra basins in 1911, when the sugar factory of Santa Eulalia del Campo started operating, and for more than sixty years it was an important source of income for Alfambra. Cultivation declined after the factory closed in the 1980s.
The ground floor houses a wide display of farm tools, machinery and transport equipment related to beet, together with displays on the seeds and root of the plant and an outdoor sugar beet plot. The upper floor is the interpretation centre, with information panels on the cultivation, its history and its traditions. A hall for events screens a video of about 25 minutes on beet cultivation.
In 2007 the museum was named a partner organization of the European Comenius programme for two years.
