About the museum
La Vijanera is a winter festival held in Silió, in the municipality of Molledo, on the first Sunday of January. Villagers dress up in masks, pelts and cowbells and act out characters such as the bear, the zarramaco, the old man, the madama or the trasgu, to see off the winter and welcome the new cycle. It is recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest and as an Intangible Cultural Heritage asset.
The museum, which works as an interpretation centre for the festival, occupies the former hermitage of Santiago, in the heart of Silió. It brings together original hand-made masks, costumes, verses (coplas), documents, posters and photographs that reconstruct decades of celebration.
Videos are shown in the rooms, and large-format photographs, both current and from the archive, are on display. The visits are led by the vijaneros themselves, who tell the story of the festival from the inside.
