About the museum
The centre is housed next to the Cistercian monastery of La Santa Espina, in the municipal area of Castromonte, and is an ethnographic museum on the countryside and rural life. It is run by the association Aperos de Ayer, founded at the end of 1991, which began collecting tools systematically in 1992. The idea for the museum took shape over some twenty-five years, and the centre has been installed in the monastery for more than a decade.
The collection comprises some 10,000 items, almost all of them donated: more than one hundred and fifty different ploughs, rudimentary tractors, sugar beet machinery, children's toys, Bilbao-style stoves, steam irons and cheese moulds. The most recent piece is a full-size house with a dining room, bedroom and bathroom. An agreement with the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, signed in 2003, funded the adaptation works.
The monastery, founded in the 12th century, housed in the 20th century an agricultural farm of the Brothers of La Salle, which gave rise to a school for agricultural foremen, a context that connects with the museum's theme.
