About the museum

The Fundación Joaquín Díaz was created in 1985 through an agreement between the Diputación (provincial council) of Valladolid and the folklorist Joaquín Díaz, who handed over his collections. It is based in the Casona del Mayorazgo, an 18th-century building in Urueña owned by the Diputación. The current premises were inaugurated in March 1991: since then its research collections have been open to specialists and the museum exhibition to the public.

The library holds thousands of books on oral tradition (songbooks, ballad collections, tales and proverbs) and on trades, costume, instruments and dance. The phonotheque and the videotheque keep field recordings made mainly in Valladolid and in Castilla y León, as well as popular music records from around the world.

The museum displays traditional musical instruments of Castilla y León, a room with phonographs and gramophones, a selection of chapbooks (pliegos de cordel) and prints showing costumes from the nine provinces of the community. The Colección de Campanas Quintana can also be visited at the same site.
