About the museum
The Museo Santa Clara occupies part of the cloister of the Monasterio de Santa María del Valle, known in Zafra as the Convento de Santa Clara. It was founded in 1428 by Gomes I Suárez de Figueroa, first lord of Feria, and his wife Elvira Laso de Mendoza, for their daughters Isabel and Leonor. The main parts were built between 1430 and 1454, with simple materials and little decoration, and the church served as the burial place of the lineage.
The House of Feria protected the convent for centuries and left its mark on the walls and on the works of art that survive. At the end of the 16th century the new infirmary was built, which now forms part of the route. Poor Clare nuns still live there.
The museum allows visitors to enter this enclosure and see the church and the sacristy, the infirmary, the grada (the nuns' gallery behind the grille), a cell and the cloister, built between the 15th and 17th centuries. Its narrative has three strands, the convent, the nobility and the city, and it is complemented by a piece of the month and guest pieces.
