About the museum
The museum was created to make the geology of Extremadura known to the public and is based on the collection of the geologist Vicente Sos Baynat, who gathered rocks, fossils and minerals from the region. Later additions made it possible to display more pieces, which are arranged according to criteria such as crystallography, mineral classes, rocks, fossils, mineral properties, mineral associations and textures.
The collection has moved several times within Mérida: after the founder’s laboratory it went to the town council, then to the Centro Cultural Alcazaba (Calle John Lennon) and later to the Museo Abierto de Mérida, on Calle Cabo Verde, where it is known as Geoemérita alongside the prehistory collection.
According to the Extremadura Tourism portal and the Directory of Museums and Collections of Spain, the museum is temporarily closed to the public. No reopening date has been found.
