About the museum

The Museo del Mar de Santa Pola has its main seat in the Castillo Fortaleza, a Renaissance military construction of the 16th century. It presents the town’s maritime heritage from several angles: cultural, historical, archaeological, ethnographic and artistic.

The permanent exhibition tells the history of Santa Pola through six major themes: prehistory, with the Cueva de las Arañas; the Iberians and their port; Portus Ilicitanus, with mosaics and objects from the Roman house of the Palmeral; the fortification of the coast; the arts of the sea, covering fishing, everyday maritime life, shipbuilding and navigation; and the salt pans of Santa Pola.

The museum is complemented by other venues: the Portus Ilicitanus site, a restored Roman harbour quarter discovered in 1982; the fishing boat Esteban González, a trawler that fished in the Mediterranean between 1985 and 2005 and which visitors can board; and the Aquarium.
