About the museum
The monastery of Santa María de la Caridad in Tulebras is the first Cistercian women's foundation in Spain. The nuns came from France and settled in the 12th century; sources place the foundation between the middle and the end of that century. Monastic life has continued on the site ever since, and several daughter foundations came from Tulebras, among them the monastery of Las Huelgas in Burgos.
The church, a single long and narrow nave, was built at the end of the 12th century and has been altered by many later reforms. The monastery suffered looting by the Napoleonic army in 1808 and the confiscation of its property in 1837, but the community returned and kept up its life of prayer and work.
Over the centuries the nuns gathered sculptures, paintings and goldsmiths' work, which are shown in a museum created so that the public can get to know the artistic heritage of the convent. The high altarpiece, taken down from the church in the 20th century, is kept there. Visits are led by two guides: a nun from the community and a lay specialist in the history of the monastery, who share curiosities and legends of the place.
