About the museum
The Cathedral of Santa María de la Huerta was built outside the walls of Tarazona and is one of the most distinctive Gothic cathedrals in Aragon. The Gothic works replaced an earlier Romanesque project, and the new church was consecrated in 1235; its layout is related to French models. During the War of the Two Pedros, in the 14th century, the church suffered serious damage.
Between the 15th and 16th centuries several parts were rebuilt and extended using the Mudéjar technique: the brick tower, the cloister with its lattice façade, and the lantern tower (cimborrio), begun in 1543. Later, grisaille paintings were added to the vault of the high chapel, a Baroque high altarpiece and, in the 18th century, the present portico and the organ.
Because of structural problems the church was closed to the public from 1984. After a full restoration that brought to light hidden Gothic and Renaissance paintings, it reopened on 16 April 2011. The tourist visit is run by the Fundación Tarazona Monumental. Since May 2025 the chapter rooms (sacristy, canons’ vestry and chapter house) can also be visited, with religious paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries and a jewel cupboard that gives its name to the so-called treasury room (sala del tesoro).
