About the museum

Trasmoz Castle, in the upper part of the village at the foot of the Moncayo (Zaragoza), is mentioned in documents from 1185. It was a fief of the Crown of Aragon from the 12th century and passed through the hands of noble families such as the Luna and the Ximénez de Urrea. Around 1530 it was abandoned after a fire damaged the keep. Today the keep has been restored, and work on the rest of the complex is progressing in phases.

Trasmoz is known for its reputation as a village of witches. In 1255 the village was excommunicated following a dispute with the Veruela monastery over the use of firewood from the mountain, and in 1511 the abbot of Veruela formally cursed it.

The former Museo de la Brujería (Witchcraft Museum), which once existed in the village itself, now keeps part of its holdings inside the castle. The visit includes an area on superstitions and local beliefs, with references to witches, potions and witches’ sabbaths; objects found in archaeological excavations in the area; and an exhibition of the belongings of Pedro Manuel Ximénez de Urrea in the keep. On the top floor there is a viewpoint with views of the Moncayo.
