About the museum
MUDITEL was founded on the initiative of a group of early-retired Telefónica employees from A Coruña, with the aim of preserving technical heritage that might otherwise have been lost. It was set up in premises in the Montiño telephone exchange, with technical and financial support from the Fundación Telefónica, and opened its doors at the start of this century. It is now run by the Asociación Museo Didáctico de Telecomunicaciones, made up of former employees who work as volunteers and guides.
Its purpose is educational: the equipment has been restored to work as it originally did, so visitors can make a call on manual switchboards, try out analogue rotary and crossbar systems, or learn about digital switching. Fibre-optic splicing machines and the computer management of digital links are also on show.
The collection includes manual switchboards with local battery and with central battery, a manual inter-urban exchange, a Rotary 7D exchange with added teaching elements, a PC32 crossbar exchange, a section of one of the first digital exchanges from Ericsson, telephones, transmission and submarine cables, radio and outside-plant equipment, and telegraphy equipment able to simulate Morse transmissions.
