Casa das Ciencias

Interactive science museum in a small palace in the Santa Margarida park, with physics modules, a Foucault pendulum and a planetarium.

Opening hoursAdmission €2 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The Casa de las Ciencias was created in 1983 by decision of the plenary of A Coruña City Council and was opened by the Spanish monarchs on 1 June 1985. It was the first of the three Museos Científicos Coruñeses (mc²), the municipal service that also includes the Domus and the Aquarium Finisterrae, and it is considered the first publicly owned interactive science centre in Spain. The museum concept was drafted by Ramón Núñez Centella, who directed the museum until 2008.

The museum occupies a former small palace in the Santa Margarida park, a building with an octagonal plan and a stone portico. A helical staircase in the centre connects all floors up to the dome, where the planetarium is, and a Foucault pendulum swings in the stairwell. The house follows the motto “prohibido no tocar” (“forbidden not to touch”).

The galleries contain physics modules to experiment with, an exhibition on pendulums and another on how the media report astronomy news. The planetarium has digital projectors and an analogue Zeiss projector, and offers live sessions and recorded programmes. In the outdoor park there are further pieces, such as a 1,500-kilo granite ball that can be moved with one hand.
