About the museum
La Palloza Casa do Sesto is a stone house with a conical roof of rye straw, the traditional type of dwelling in the Ancares mountains. According to the Xunta de Galicia, the building dates back to at least 1770. It was the main house of the owning family until 1970, and it has been preserved with its original structure, so that people and livestock continued to share the same roof, as was customary in the area.
The house opened to the public in 1989, and in 2007 the regional government recognised it as a visitable ethnographic collection. The museum aims to make known the way of life and culture of this high mountain area. The thick straw roof, about 1.5 metres deep, keeps the interior at a stable temperature.
The visit covers the palloza’s spaces: the sleeping alcoves, the hearth with its central fire, the oven and the stables for large and small livestock. They preserve the tools and furniture the family used every day to live self-sufficiently, not as exhibition pieces. In a corner there is a small shop with ceramics made by the family itself, and the palloza hosts some cultural activities, such as concerts.
