About the museum

The Museo Evaristo Valle was founded in 1981 as a cultural foundation thanks to the bequest of María Rodríguez del Valle, niece of the painter Evaristo Valle. After the artist's death in 1951, she preserved his works, personal belongings and documents, and endowed the foundation with funds and with her residence in Somió, made up of two buildings.

One of them was built specifically for the museum in 1971; the other is a late 19th-century mansion, remodelled in 1942 and later adapted as a museum space. In 2017 the buildings and the works were declared Bien de Interés Cultural (a Spanish heritage designation) in the category of monument.

The permanent collection brings together more than two hundred paintings and drawings by the artist, most of which he kept until his death, and six rooms show a selection that illustrates his role in introducing avant-garde painting to Asturias at the beginning of the twentieth century. The route covers his time in Paris, the Asturian landscapes of the 1910s, rural, seafaring and mining scenes, carnival, the Cuban series of 1929 and the late works of the 1940s. The museum also includes a reconstruction of his studio and a collection of shells inherited from his father.

The gardens, of more than 16,000 m² in French and English styles, contain some 120 species of trees and shrubs, more than twenty sculptures, a bird-watching area and the bonsai space from the donation of Rolf Beyebach.
