About the museum
The origins of the museum go back to the 1990s, when the University of Murcia grew and most of its centres moved to the Espinardo campus. As faculties and schools changed location, many scientific, technical, artistic and historical objects, often already obsolete for teaching, were being lost. Professor Pedro Antonio Lillo Carpio then proposed creating a permanent cultural centre to conserve them.
The project took shape at the end of the decade, when the Rectorado (rectorate) adopted it and pavilion number 4 of the former Cuartel de Artillería Jaime I, ceded to the university, was assigned to it. The building was renovated between 1999 and 2001, and the museum opened on 9 July 2003. Its first curator was José Miguel García Cano.
The museum today has about 220 collections and more than 3,000 pieces. It has two permanent exhibition rooms: Sala I, on the first floor, reviews the history of the institution from its medieval antecedents under Alfonso X el Sabio to its consolidation after the Civil War, passing through the Universidad Literaria, the Universidad Libre and the creation of the University in 1915; Sala II, on the second floor, shows representative pieces from the university’s faculties and schools. There is also the Sala Temporal “José Nicolás Almansa” and the “Sala Pequeña”, where temporary exhibitions are held, as well as an assembly hall for lectures and cycles.
