About the museum
The Reales Fábricas de Sargadelos were founded in the 18th century on the initiative of Antonio Raimundo Ibáñez, Marquis of Sargadelos. They are regarded as Spain's first integrated iron and steel company, and they made weapons and ammunition for the army. In the 19th century an innovative pottery factory there introduced models strongly influenced by England. Production stopped in 1875, and the complex was declared a historic-artistic site in 1972.
Of the complex, the blast furnaces, the reservoir and its channel (now a promenade), the marquis's pazo and the administrative building, which houses the museum, have survived. The exhibition shows how the production of the Reales Fábricas evolved and traces some milestones in the industrial history of Galicia.
