About the museum

The Reina del Carmen is a wooden-hulled tuna boat of about 25 metres in length, built in the 1960s. It left Burela for the first time on 27 June 1968, bound for the Azores, and for some thirty years it fished for tuna, swordfish, hake and anchovy. Its last crossing, from Santander to Burela, took place on 27 September 1998.

In 2000 Burela city council bought the boat and saved it from being scrapped, to turn it into a space dedicated to maritime culture. Since then it has operated as an ethnographic boat museum and, since 2010, it has been part of the Asociación Estatal de Museos del Mar (Spanish national association of maritime museums). It has received the Bandera Azul (Blue Flag) award for its environmental education and marine resource protection campaigns.

The visit, always guided, covers the deck, the bridge with its navigation and communication equipment, the cabins of the captain, the engineer and the second officer, the mess, the galley and the toilet. Inside the hull are the engine room, the crew's rest area, the store and the hold. The engines and ship systems are kept in working order. Along the route the traditional fishing methods are explained, such as the cacea or curricán (trolling) for tuna, longline, gillnet, trawl and pots.
