About the museum
The museum was created at the beginning of 1968 in the cathedral of Mondoñedo and over time occupied a large number of spaces in the building. Mondoñedo was the capital of one of Galicia's seven provinces until 1833 and is the seat of the Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol. The basilica cathedral of the Assumption, known as the “kneeling cathedral” because of its low height, was declared a national monument in 1902.
The collection contains pieces of great historical and artistic value. Outstanding are the 15th-century English alabasters from the workshops of London and Nottingham, a 15th-century altarpiece of Mary Magdalene, large 16th-century Flemish panels and silver and ivory pieces such as sceptres, trays, chalices, monstrances, a processional cross and candlesticks.
On the upper floor there are two large Gothic halls with altarpieces and canvases, more than three hundred sculptures, large choir books and liturgical vestments.
