About the museum
The museum is housed in the Benedictine monastery of San Salvador in Vilanova de Lourenzá, founded in the 10th century by Count Osorio Gutiérrez, known as the Conde Santo (Holy Count). The present church, dedicated to Santa María de Valdeflores, was built in the 17th and 18th centuries and has a Baroque façade remodelled in the 18th century by Casas y Novoa. Today it functions as a parish church.
The visit takes in the church, the sacristy and the Baroque reliquary of polychrome wood, the chapels of Valvanera and Valdeflores and the tomb of the Conde Santo, a place of pilgrimage during its annual romería (pilgrimage festival). Elsewhere in the complex, the monastery library, with some 4,000 books, and a collection of sacred art are on display, including goldsmiths' work, sculpture, painting, vestments and furniture.
The collection includes painted panels with scenes of the miracles of the Conde Santo, sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries and various pieces of goldsmiths' work, among them an 18th-century ensemble preserved in the Valvanera chapel.
