About the museum
The Museo Provincial do Mar was founded in 1969, when the Provincial Council of Lugo agreed to create a museum devoted to the maritime world, based on the pieces gathered by teacher Francisco M. Rivera Casás and his pupils. It is the first public sea museum in Galicia, and it covers the history of fishermen and fishwives (pescantinas), navigators and whale hunters, net menders (redeiras) and shipwrights (carpinteros de ribera).
The building was constructed in 1931 as the school of San Cibrao, at the wish of the emigrant couple in Argentina formed by José María Montenegro and Manuela Goñi Maíste. The Cruz da Venta residents' association managed the museum from 1994 to 2004. Since then the centre has been run by the Provincial Council, through the Museo Provincial de Lugo, within the Rede Museística Provincial (Provincial Museum Network).
Four rooms cover: graphic documentation and naval mechanics; ethnography and marine fauna, with fishing gear, a traiñón (traditional Galician fishing boat), whale fishing and marine mammal skeletons; marine fauna and flora, with malacology, seaweed, corals, crustaceans and fossils; and navigation, with nautical charts, instruments, signals, anchors and knots. Anchors and cannons are displayed outdoors.
