About the museum
The Museo Histórico Municipal de Santaella is housed in the Casa de las Columnas, an 18th-century Baroque manor house on Calle Antonio Palma Luque. It reopened in 2016, replacing its previous home, the Casa de la Cultura, a former granary dating from the reign of Charles III.
The museum was conceived as an educational resource: it aims to help people learn history, develop their powers of observation and become aware of the need to conserve heritage. For this reason it invites visitors to act as their own guide, and it offers dramatised visits and activities for schools.
It is organised into two sections. The archaeology section brings together remains from the Palaeolithic to the Hispano-Muslim period, with pieces from prehistory and from the Pre-Roman, Roman, Hispano-Visigothic and Hispano-Muslim worlds. The ethnography section shows, in two rooms, tools from the recent past of a predominantly agricultural town. It is complemented by glimpses of palaeontology and mineralogy and by a learning room where children can put into practice what they have learned.
