About the museum
The Museo Histórico Local de Montilla was founded in 1994 and is run by Montilla town council in collaboration with the Asociación de Arqueología Agrópolis. It has been listed in the Registro de Museos de Andalucía (Andalusian Museum Register) since 1997, and it was set up to share the archaeological heritage of Montilla. Its first home was the Casa de la Cultura.
Since 2018 it has occupied the Fábrica de la Luz building, the former headquarters of the Cooperativa Eléctrica Montillana, which for some years also housed the regulatory council of the Montilla-Moriles DOP. In this location the extensive archaeological collection has been expanded with loans and donations from private individuals.
The pieces come from sites in the region and cover the history from prehistory to the 19th century: fossils, minerals, Iberian votive offerings, glass and bronzes, accompanied by texts, photographs, models and drawings. Highlights include a display of historic bells from Montilla collected by Rafael Salido, a collection of 27 models of historic ships donated by Antonio Alférez, and the coat of arms of the Marqueses from the convent of San Lorenzo.
