About the museum

The Museo Histórico Municipal de Puente Genil was approved in 1981, and its first home was the Hogar Juvenil. At first it had few holdings, which grew in 1985 thanks to archaeological excavations carried out by the museum itself and to operations by SEPRONA (the Guardia Civil's nature protection unit), mainly at the Roman villa of Fuente Álamo and the castle of Anzur.

Since 1991, after restoration, it has occupied the former convent of La Victoria, a 17th-century building that is part of the historic-cultural complex known as Los Frailes. Besides the museum, the complex houses the Sala Fosforito, the Sala Pérez Almeda, the Museo Municipal Permanente de la Semana Santa and the Teatrillo del Convento.

The museum has two sections. The archaeology section covers prehistory and protohistory (Room I) and the medieval period (Room II), with Middle Palaeolithic tools, Bell Beaker pottery, Iberian and Roman sculptures, capitals, bronzes, Latin inscriptions and Andalusi coins. The ethnography section (Room III) is dedicated to the traditional production of dulce de membrillo (quince paste), with containers, models of a factory, a waterwheel and a cart.

Highlights

  • Middle Palaeolithic tools found on the Genil terraces
  • Zoomorphic Iberian sculptures and Roman sculptures from the High Imperial period
  • Caliphal “honeycomb” capital and collection of Andalusi coins
  • Ethnography section on dulce de membrillo (quince paste)
