About the museum

The Casa-Museo Alfonso Ariza occupies the house and studio of the artist and his wife at 39 Calle Santaella in La Rambla. Alfonso Ariza Moreno (La Rambla, 1920–1998) named the town council as heir to his estate and wrote that the house should become a museum so that his work would last and be known to everyone.

The museum holds a substantial legacy that shows the career of a versatile artist. Ariza began with classical realism, with portraits, still lifes and landscapes, and from the 1950s turned towards abstraction. His output includes oil paintings, watercolours and inks, textured paintings with earth and glass, assemblages with fabric, rope or metal, drawings, ceramics and wrought ironwork in small and large formats. The traditional ceramics of his wife, Antonia Carballo, which they called “la ramblesco”, are also on display.

The building has several rooms with a selection of the work, the studio, rooms for periodic exhibitions and a large central courtyard where the larger wrought-iron sculptures stand. Since 1997 the museum has hosted the Beca Alfonso Ariza, a scholarship in clay sculpture, and today the artist’s name is borne by the contemporary culture event “Aptitudes”.
