About the museum

The Eskoriatza museum was founded around 1986 as the Museo Escuela, a room set up in the town hall to complement the teaching of history at the Luis Ezeiza school. Later the town council acquired the Ibarraundi palace and, in 2005, the Museo Escuela became the Museo Ibarraundi, which keeps the name of the historic building.

The building is thought to date from the mid-15th century and to have belonged to the Galartza family. The oldest documents describe it as a palace or tower house, although archaeological studies indicate that it was mostly built in the 16th century. Between the 18th and 21st centuries it was used as a caserío (farmhouse) and, for part of that time, as a palace.

The exhibition is divided into four areas: an audiovisual room on the Leintz valley and the origins of its villages in the Middle Ages; a history display from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age, with the emblematic pieces from Axtroki and the Atxorrotx castle; an ethnography exhibition arranged in thematic corners (flax, iron, school, kitchen and beliefs); and, since 2016, an ammonite exhibition with some seventy specimens found in Mutriku.
