About the museum
The Museo Mariano Benlliure in Crevillent grew out of the link between the sculptor and the town, maintained through the Magro family. Benlliure expressed the wish that, after his death, some of the sketches and plaster models from his studio should be taken to Crevillent. In 1961 Álvaro Magro opened a first permanent exhibition with nearly 109 works, and in 1967 the municipal museum was installed in the crypt of the parish church of Nuestra Señora de Belén. An annex was opened in 1985 on Calle Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, and in 1989 the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos awarded the museum its Medalla al Mérito (Medal of Merit).
The museum closed in April 2000 for a complete refurbishment. The current building joins the annex, an industrial hall from the late 19th century, with the adjoining property, with a total area of about 885 m² between them.
The permanent exhibition shows 135 works distributed across eight settings that evoke the artist's studio. Alongside the plaster models, some finished works are displayed in their final material. The museum also holds archive collections and a library, and runs educational and cultural activities.
