About the museum
The museum occupies a building annexed to the Castillo Sanctuary, at the top of the hill of the same name. The original building was the hermitage-sanctuary, more specifically the hermit’s house, built between 1740 and 1742, reformed in 1819 and between 1880 and 1882, and also used as lodgings for the Franciscan friars.
The refurbishment project was processed in 1986; the foundation works began in 1995 and finished in 1998, and the museum opened on 8 May 1999. It cost around €300,000 and was financed by the Yecla town council and by the regional departments of Culture and of Territorial Policy of the Region of Murcia. It is run by the Asociación de Mayordomos de la Purísima Concepción (Association of Stewards of the Purísima Concepción).
The first floor gives access to the museum and houses a meeting room, the Marian library and a hall where the Virgin’s float, used in the festivities, is displayed. The second floor holds the exhibition itself, an L-shaped room around the cloister, with costumes, flags, standards, arquebuses and paintings related to the festivities in honour of the Purísima Concepción, patron of Yecla, which are held from 5 to 8 December.
