About the museum
When mining ended in the Tharsis area at the end of the 20th century, initiatives began to preserve its mining and railway heritage. The museum was created to gather the material of the British company Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Company and of the firms that succeeded it. It opened provisionally in 2007, and in December 2014 an extension with a hangar was inaugurated.
It is housed in the former mining hospital, an early 20th-century building within the heritage zone of the Tharsis and La Zarza mines, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2014. The facilities include three rooms: the Historical Archive, an anthropological room and the collection of foundry patterns.
The collection includes more than 5,000 wooden foundry patterns, of which an important part is on display, as well as documents, mining machinery and tools, and photographs. In the hangar are displayed the steam locomotive “Corrales” and several carriages of the Tharsis railway. The same building houses the company's archive (1866–1978).
