About the museum
The Museu do Contrabando (Museum of Smuggling) opened in 2009 in Santana de Cambas, a village in the municipality of Mértola close to the border with Spain. It was created by converting the former parish council (junta de freguesia) building, which is also described as the village's former post of the Guarda Fiscal (customs and excise police).
The museum seeks to preserve the memory of smuggling, one of the most striking aspects of regional history in the second half of the 20th century, and to share it with younger people and with those who never knew that world. It brings together images, accounts and objects linked to smuggling and the Guarda Fiscal, such as grinders, coffee tins, soda bottles, a smuggler's sackcloth backpack and a customs officer's uniform, as well as testimonies from smugglers recorded on video.
The key to the museum can be requested at the Centro de Convívio (community centre) of Santana de Cambas, right next to the building, and the museum only opens for those who come to visit it.
