About the museum
The Museu do Rio arose from the need to preserve traditions, techniques, artefacts and memories linked to the Guadiana river and its riverside communities. The first exhibition was presented to the community in November 1994 and opened in January 1995 in the former primary school of Guerreiros do Rio. The project was prepared by an external team led by the museologist Luísa Rogado, with the collaboration of the Alcance association.
After being extended and remodelled, it gained an auditorium, a long-term exhibition room, storerooms and a technical office, and it reopened on 8 September 2006 with the exhibition “Olhar o Guadiana por dentro” (Looking at the Guadiana from Within). This presents traditional fishing, navigation, river trade, riverside villages and smuggling during the Estado Novo era.
Since 2008 the museum has also hosted the exhibition “Barcos Tradicionais do Baixo Guadiana” (Traditional Boats of the Lower Guadiana), a collection of miniature replicas of the boats that sailed the river until the mid-1960s, made by José Murta Pereira, a native of Guerreiros do Rio. The museum is part of the Alcoutim Municipal Museum.
